Y11 Kimi Chung - Chiang Mai, Thailand
My CAS project to Chiang Mai was in short, nothing less than fulfilling. We had made a multitude of unforgettable memories, such as cycling with the children, experiencing a Thai market for the first time and going to a Sunday Church filled to the brim with lively music– subverting my expectations of the typically solemn atmosphere, and, most importantly, serving the community as we helped initiate, plan, and paint a building at the orphanage, testing our physical limits and collaboration skills.
An especially emotional moment was when we had to part ways with the children on the last day. We had made friendship bracelets as keepsakes, decorated and lit lanterns as we embraced our final goodbyes. Although sanitary conditions in Chiang Mai were less than ideal, it acted as a pivotal opportunity for me to acknowledge my privileged upbringing and realities faced by those living in less fortunate environments. Growing up in Hong Kong, a bustling metropolis known for its fast-paced lifestyle and urban vibrancy, it was especially inspiring given that the children had endured inexplicable tragedies in life, yet still optimistic, full of life, and focused on the positive sides of things, therefore this trip allowed me to foster a greater sense of social awareness of the world around me. I feel immensely grateful for being a part of this project and getting to know the children in so many different aspects.
