Y12 Carena Chan - Physical Expedition

This sailing project allowed me to develop key skills while working toward meaningful goals.

One significant takeaway was identifying my strengths and weaknesses—such as my precision in controlling the tiller but initial struggles with balance during tacking. Through trial and error, my partner and I corrected our technique by observing each other and reinforcing proper form. The experience highlighted the importance of reflection and teamwork, especially in high-pressure situations like sailing during strong winds. Encouraging each other with trust and positivity strengthened our bond and taught me the value of a supportive mindset in overcoming challenges.

Planning was essential, especially since this was a new CAS project. With Mr. Houghton’s guidance, we set achievable objectives—completing HKSF Levels 1 and 2—while also incorporating charity work with Sailability. Research and adaptability were key; for instance, we adjusted group activity plans (e.g., opting for a beach picnic over cooking) to suit logistical constraints. Collaborating with Sailability further enriched the project, as their mission to make sailing inclusive for people with disabilities inspired us. Learning about their adaptive techniques, like using tubes for steering, deepened my appreciation for accessibility in sports.

Ethically, our partnership with Sailability reinforced the importance of inclusion and community support. Their motto, “We never say no, we never say can’t,” motivated us to advocate for their cause. This project not only improved my sailing skills but also broadened my perspective on how sports can drive social change, leaving me with lasting lessons in resilience, planning, and empathy.
